Search dictionary headwords

Search for headwords containing: (e.g., Aachen, Roma) Select a Search Option:Exact match

(eg, "roma" will find only "Roma")String searching

(eg, "roma" will find "aroma," "monochromata," "Roma," etc.)

  • When doing string searching, results include all headwords containing the string you entered. Entering roma will return Roma but also Vaison La Romaine, Mavromati, etc.

  • Use the ^ sign to match the beginning of words: ^roma will only return words starting in roma-, not, e.g., Mavromati

  • Use the $ sign to match the end of headwords in this database with caution, if at all! Headwords in Smith carry additional information, and entering Roma$ will fail to find Roma Italy.

Search the full text of the dictionary

Search the full text for: (e.g., Hellenistic or colonnade*) Similar Word SearchSelect a Search Option: Single Term and Phrase Search (default)

Proximity Searching in the same Sentence or in the same Paragraph

  • By default, full-text results include only words exactly matching the string you entered. Entering roma will only return Roma.

  • The asterisk is a wildcard character (Roma* retrieves any words starting in Roma-: Roma, Romance, etc.).

  • 'Similar word' search finds similar words if the word entered is longer than five characters. Your mileage may vary!

Tips for using this form

  • Click SEARCH (or hit Enter at anytime) to execute your Search; click CLEAR to clear the entire form and start over.

  • You will normally use the headword search and full-text search options separately; however, it is possible to search the text of large entries by entering the headword in the upper search box and another string in the lower search box. Try searching for Romulus in the Roma entry.

  • The search form does not allow for punctuation marks, but if you are looking, say, for citations of Pliny's Natural History in the dictionary, simply enter "Pliny HN" without punctuation.
